I think the correct lakeside will be the one on Bentley lane in wrightington? Can someone who has been there confirm this?

Received from Simon 07/05/08

I fished Beacon View on Saturday 3rd May, fished really well. I bagged umpteen Carp and Tench the best being a 5lb Mirror :-). i used two different methods the first i pole fished using Pellet flavoured with Super Scopex, the second i hair rigged meat using my carp rods and also using a PVA bag with pellets.

Hopefully be going again in the next few weeks when i get some time :-)

Received from Craig 06/05/08

If this is the correct lakeside please see below link: - http://www.fisheries.co.uk/lakeside/index.htm

Received from Craig 23/04/08 - many thanks Craig

Well, first fishing trip of the year tomorrow just off to stannings which is one of the most unpredictable places on earth for fishing, but its a cracking little place with a bit of knowledge, will let you all know how I go on, and just for the record, an excellent local site for fishing.

I fished Lathom and i think on pond 4 light tackle with maggots is a real good fight with the carp in there. The carp are superb fighters and the fish clean and it is good all year round great place to fish

OK, I'm going to have the last word on the under 18 issue.  We were all probably kids when we started fishing & probably all taught by our fathers.  We should be encouraging youngsters to take up our beautiful sport but they also need to be taught some important life values along the way.  They should be taught to respect other people, respect the rules, respect the fish and also learn to be tolerant of others.  If they make mistakes we should be there to help them so they don't make the same mistake again.  Wouldn't it be a better world if everyone learnt how to get on with everyone else?

The Webmaster

I disagree the people who are saying ban under 18's from certain fisheries. If a child is doing something wrong you should at least say something so they don't do it again. I think banning them is going a bit to far maybe they are not allowed without the supervision of an adult. ALL UNDER 18's ARE NOT BAD APPLE'S most under 18's go fishing without causing any trouble. I started fishing with my dad and i was brought up to respect the waters, fish and not to litter. tight lines
Received from James 02/10/07

Just had a look at your website and it looks pretty impressive.  I looked at some of the carp pictures and one says 66lb, and errr.....if its true then that would be a british record! it looks about 20lb so you may want to question it.  Most of the fish are brilliant apart from the people who think they can post
a 20lb fish and pretend its 66lb. No doubt if it was 66lb then they would be  on the cover of every angling paper in the country!

Received from Zac 04/10/07

I started fishing when i was 12, now 25, but i didn't do any of the kind you see now at fisheries. Still, I'm not saying they shouldn't start fishing.
Received from Paul 04/10/07

hi in response to the under 18 should be supervised or not be allowed , no i don't think so ............. when did you start fishing ?????? sorry this makes me mad yep the kid did do wrong , but in his mind may be he didn't, WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE A WORD  help is all thats needed, as for the lad with his father a quiet word any way i agree with

Received from Wayne 01/10/07

Fished carr side farm last week, great day but does anyone know how much it is to night fish?

Can anyone help with this & also let me know where this fishery is?

Received from Thomas 24/09/07

I was fishing at wrightington fisheries yesterday on the horseshoe lake and on the bit in the middle. A kid on the other side was casting his leger rig into the margins behind me all day and then sent it flying past them and about a foot to my right. He was supervised but his dad / grandad did nothing and the kid didn't even apologise. I would love to see under 18's banned on some waters. From my experiences 99% leave litter, mess about, cause trouble and don't treat the fish properly.

Received from Crofty 23/09/07

Under 18's should be supervised. I will accept that. The thing that annoyed me was, me and my dad were having good sport, and a kid at the other end of the water, casted his ledger bomb 60 yards passed me and bang, right next to my dads line in the margins as he was playing a nice tench. One thing it could have been badly tangled lines or the ledger lead hitting someone's head, causing a knockout or worse.

Received from Paul 17/09/07

So kids under eighteen should be banned then, don't you mean supervised or how will they learn, young kids should be encouraged to fish, that's what the sports about , but respect SHOULD ALWAYS be given to other anglers - couldn't agree more, the webmaster

Received from Greg 12/09/07

Hi there - just moved to the Leyland area and wondered if anyone knew much about Farrington Lodges fisheries. Are these well thought of? IS it worth getting a licence or should i just stick with the day tickets? What is it stocked with? Also I'd be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of a good chub and barbel river nearby (and how to get a ticket/licence). Thanks!!

If anyone can help then please email Stuart at stupdjob123@yahoo.com

Received from Stuart 11/09/07

Turbary house, Whitestake. - 2 waters. The new water has loads of bream, crucians and small carp and tench, float fished in the margins. KIDS UNDER 18 NEED TO BE BANNED! WHAT A PAIN! GET RID OF THEM! plenty of fish though. Enjoyable.

Greenhalgh Fishery, Kirkham. - Went yesterday and what a place. It was a very warm day and caught around 20 carp most double figure. Beat my personal best by catching a 17lb Carp. Everyone around the lake was catching. I strongly recommend Luncheon Meat and the pellets supplied in the shop at the lake. Going for the weekend next week. (Cant Wait)

Information for Ollie. If you contact waynes tackle or Ted carters in preston, they should be able to advise on matches

Received from Paul 10/08/07

Lancaster canal at preston - where the lancaster canal ends in preston/ashton on ribble. Apparantly its full of pike. I have been 4 times with lures for a few hours, this summer, and not even had a take. has anyone caught much pike here and is dead bait better than lures here? as I usually catch more on lures than dead bait in the leeds liverpool canal.

Received from Paul 08/08/07

Can anyone help??

I'm only 16 and i want to start match fishing, do you know anywhere in the preston area where there are any 'open matches'? thanks. email ollie2376@aol.com

Just recently been to Brookside fisheries in Betley on one of my rest days! Gobsmacked to find the carp taking bread off the top right in front of you. Between me and my mate we had 74 carp and 2 big roach out just fishing on floating bread. Biggest carp was 9 1/2lb but they get much bigger apparently. Best fishing i have ever had.

My first visit today to Martin Hall with my daughter. Lovely weather and fish all day long. Mostly small roach and perch but some good skimmers and two nice tench. Very well looked after and we'll certainly be back VERY soon. Superb place, especially for young anglers and beginners

Received from Paul 24/07/07

I haven't fished lathom in years... thinking of giving it a go on tuesday though.  How's pond 2 fishing recently - the specimen one?  If anyone's got any recommendations on techniques / baits to use on this particular pond, i'd be grateful for an email to:    efcrobmc@hotmail.com  Cheers!

Bluestones - mawdsley. Not worth fishing unless you're a beginner. A ridiculous amount of skimmers/bream/roach.over 40 in one session.up to 2lb.most tiny though.same as visit before. Couldn't get through them to get to the carp.there are some monstrous carp but there are other places with carp without bream.

Lathom is by far the best lake I have ever fished because when your float goes under you just don't know what ur going to pull in, fished this lake  about 10 times now and nearly every time I have been its been a fish a chuck for me love this lake strongly recommend it and i will be fishing it plenty of times this summer.

Fished Lakeside for the last 3 weeks and hooked into one 8lb-ish. Fished it over 30 times last year and average was 10+ fish per session average 6lb. discovered that it has been stocked with hundreds of 3"-4" carp, great nuisance factor.  was aware of stock pond being full of these tiddlers last year. Don't know what's happened but most of the big fish seem to have disappeared and so have my father and I. Waste of time now.

Excellent fishing venue - Beacon View. Went the other day and my brother caught an 11lb 8oz Sturgeon (see Fishy pix), An 8lb Carp and around 30-40 small carp, rudd, roach and bream. And it was raining all day. Will be definitely going again when its warmer.

Thanks for that Paul.  I will venture on down to give it a chuck in the next couple of weeks and let you know how it goes.

Received from Whitty 17/05/07

Whitty, FYI - Beaconview is my favourite fishery. Very deep close in. In summer, loads of small sturgeon and barbel and some big carp, all 2 yards out. Its great. Give it a go.
Received from Paul 14/05/07 - cheers Paul.

Fished Greenhalgh today, weather wasn't great but a good days fishing. Had carp to 10lbs on pole fished pellet. Lost a couple of biggies as well. Fished peg 30, plenty of fish being caught near to the island as well.
Received from Crofty 11/05/07

Fished Fairhaven on Sat 05/05/07, started at 9.30am very slow start.  Had eight fish until 4 pm (mirror, common and tench) but then it went berserk for my last hour and a half.  Ended up with another ten in the bag !!  Caught them on strawberry pellet and double red maggot.  Can anyone give me some information on Beacon View at Appley Bridge?
Received from Whitty 6/05/07

Fairhaven fishery, Leyland. - This fishery is kind of a hit and miss place. Fished a peg in April. Had 20 tench, then the next time the week after, same peg, 18 tench, one carp. Next time, week after, in same peg, 1 small roach. All 3 days were sunny days in the evening, pretty much the same temperature, hardly any wind.same bait used. Cant understand it. In March, not much, a few tench and a few ghost carp were caught, about (6lb). Should be very good in summer and probably sick of catching tench.
Received from Paul 4/05/07

Went to charity farm on sat 22/04/07. Found it on website, great days fishing on pond 2 plenty of roach and tench and a good 9 pound mirror, get there early as the place soon filled up. booked a day off on monday to go again.

I've been fishing Orcheton farm in Eccleston (next to the cattery) recently and its responding well to corn in the margins for plenty of carp and barbel. Also worth a go on the surface late on when all the carp are in the surface layers.

Received from Crofty 22/09/06

I have spent all my life fishing for wild fish in Scotland, until I moved to Ormskirk and I spent £35 on a cheap feeder rod and tackle and went coarse fishing for the very first time at Lathom Fishery. I lost count of how many fish i caught in 1& 1/2 hours i fished on the beginers pool, then i moved to pool 1 at 7 o,clock and spent 1 hour catching several carp to 4 pound,2 3-4 pound barbel,1 tench about 2-3 pound and what i think was a roach of about a pound. All this fun for a beginner, excellent time for only £5. cant wait untill i learn more about coarse fishing.  A BIG THANKYOU AS I FOUND THIS GREAT PLACE ON YOUR WEB SITE. As i have 11 children i will be spending more time here and will teach all of them how to fish.

Received from Ellis 17/09/06

Can anyone help? can anyone give me some details over who to contact to become a member of Wigan anglers?  If so please contact crofty@june1981.freeserve.co.uk

Cattery - this place is on fire. Lots of fish being caught on the surface and in the margins on corn. Just make sure to beef up your tackle if fishing near the lily pads!!!

Received from Crofty 29/07/06

Beacon View - fantastic lake. great day out. had been fishing the canal and not a bite, so me and a mate upsticked and headed for this lake. bait not in water more than 5 minutes and a succession of nice roach were leaping out the bank towards me. luvly water, nice and clean. good fish. will be heading back with bigger tackle to get me some of the big fishies that were leaping about all over the place.
Received from Greg 30/06/06

Fished Beacon View for the first time on 30.05.2006, quite windy but not too bad. I settled into the corner swim by the bungalow, the one with the floating platform in it, someone mentioned fishing close to the raft was best. After about 1/2 hour no bites, so i switched to about 2ft out by the reeds and caught steadily from then on, catching bream, roach, common carp, crucian carp on corn fed over hemp and pellet. Unfortunately no sign of the barbel or sturgeon were showing. I will definitely be back soon.
Received from Tim 05/06/06

Got back from Thursland Hill a few weeks ago – Had 2 low double commons and a low double Mirror. Fished the “U” shaped lake and the alarms never stopped, fishing on halibut boilies loads of 4-8 Commons. Fished a day on the smaller lake with the pole and caught loads of smallish commons to about 3 lb. Helen’s great and the static caravan we rented is spotless.  Click here to see some pix.

Received from william age 14 10/01/06

I've only been fishing 12 months, mostly at lathom. I've had tench 4lb, barbel 4lb, chub 3lb and an 8lb common. PB. and these are only the babies, me and my lad try other places but just keep coming back.
Received from Jimmy 25/09/05

I agree with Colin re The Cattery.  There was a match on at Charity Farm so an unknown angler (thanks mate) suggested The Cattery to me and my son.  Only fished late afternoon but had plenty carp to double figures, although the nicest fish was my lad Chris's 6lb ghostie which he took from the margins on light float tackle and a scrap of Spam. We floatfished meat and corn in the margins to sort out the carp although they were also taking worm.  We also had success with the feeder towards the island and catching up in the water on maggots. Tight lines.
Received from John 23/09/05

Cattery at Eccleston - Excellent days fishing on the No2 lake fishing just as you go on where you can get on the islands either by pole or rod and line.  I fed with pellets and fished corn and wham literally a fish a cast for 3 hours solid. Started catching roach and bream but then the carp to 3lb took over.

Received from Colin 25/08/05

Just like to add my comments at how good beacon view lake is in Appley Bridge wigan. If was the first time i fished it yesterday 26.6.05. I caught many varieties of fish and thoroughly enjoyed the day, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fishing :)
Received from Craig 27/06/05

Its great to see a site which is dedicated not just to the mature angler, but is encouraging young people to enjoy the sport. Keep up the good work.
Received from Wayne 16/06/05

I found your site very useful, thank you for your effort. I fish Gorsty Hall lake near Crewe in Cheshire quite often and have had some good results. I will get you some pictures next time I go of the lake. I don't know if you know it. The day ticket is £6 per rod per day with carp to 30lb, my biggest being 20lb so far. Still trying for the big one,,,,aren't we all. Also there is a Chadwick dam in Stalybridge, which is at the back of Stamford park boating lake which holds a good head of fish, perch, roach, tench and carp. The biggest carp i have seen was around the 15lb mark though I have caught a good number of smaller ones up to about 6lb. The fishing is free but a current rod license is essential as water board do visit on a regular basis. If you would like more details and pictures please let me know. Thanks again.
Received from Dave Careless 07/06/05

we have found the best ever place for perch fishing for any one in the leyland area. at leyland daf near farington there is a man made pond and if you cast a worm in then reel it in slowly you will get a perch every time. they averaged at about a pound. great fishing !!!

Received from Mark alex & Dixy 30/05/05

Hi There, I would like to tell you of the most fantastic haul I have ever had, or ever seen caught in all my years of fishing man and boy.

It was around a month ago (April) and I had decided to introduce my fishing buddy to Brookside Fisheries in Betley nr Crewe .  I had already had some big catches of around each between 5 and 15lb carp (mirrors and common) Maybe 20-25 per session – so my arm has been aching here before!  It was quite a windy day and this was putting the sheeny ripples on the water making float bite indication a bit hit and miss. So my friend Ian decided to go on the ledger – but I persevered with the float. – Thank god I did! While all around wheren’t getting much action – I began pulling them in one-a-chuck! – Ian wasn’t close behind.  All the roach we caught felt like bream (but fighting back!) and all the carp I caught were around the 8-10lb stamp.

It was getting a tad embarrassing calling out our running totals to each other everytime we landed – the looks of envy from the other anglers – I was revelling in it because for the first time ever, the boot was on the other foot and I was catching FOR A CHANGE!!

I actually stopped at the magic total of 100 – then Ian said go on go for another to top the ton! – so I dipped my line one last time an pulled out a corker roach of around a pound and a quarter.

Species ranged from Roach to one and a half pounds and Carp (mirror and common) from 3lb to 15lb  Bait all day was smelly three day old – kept in the garage Maggots – all on size 16 barbless on one and a half pound line!  No doubt I could have gone on to more – but I wanted to leave a breakable record for myself on this water one day.  I would have always recommended this swim – but now even more so!

Remember the name Brookside Fisheries in Betley, Crewe – NOT to be confused with Brookside in Warrington !

I have attached a couple of photos – hope they can be of use…see photos on Fishy Pix page

By the way – the guy who owns the fishery is called Dave.

Just found your web site, think it is a brill site. I am in North Wales, one day ticket fishery is called the Brickfield pond believe there are some good Carp upper(20`s) in this water, along with good Bream, Perch, roach, tench, rudd. It is a day ticket water and tickets can be got on the bank. Local tackle shop is Geoff`s tackle on Wellington Road, Rhyl, which is approx 5 mins from fishery

Are you aware of Hill Farm in Little Crosby, Merseyside. Hill Farm is not far from a popular fishing location called Carr Side Farm in Ince Blundell. Any way the point is, Hill farm was leased to Merseyside Police for a number of years. The owner has obviously realised its potential and has re-taken control. You can now fish on one of the 5 small or 2 larger interlinked ponds for £4 a day. The larger ponds at their deepest are about 8 to 10 feet. I've seen 20lb+ carp being caught by other anglers and i've caught 3 figure qtys of small roach and perch since january 04.  Don't listen to me, investigate because i think its worth knowing about.

Not been on in a while and a little disappointed not to have seen more interest in such a great site. Now that winters here and many of us keen as mustard (mad, stupid or just plain crazy!) anglers are still itching to wet are lines I have to mention the river darwin just before it reaches the river ribble. After foolishly agreeing to take my brother fishing I thought I'd try the stretch under the duel carriage way near the capital center. Not expecting a great catch I just brought the basics , a pint and a half of "disco maggots" , some river ace groundbait, a pint of casters and the highly under-rated , good old bread.
Using lightweight rod's with a light set up (stick float's with rubbers , trotting number 8's down the line and 2lb line with 1lb hooklength's) we set to feeding the far bank with river ace mixed with a few casters. After about a good hour the bites started coming and within the four hours we were there , we managed a reasonable bag of 17 roach and four chub. This might not seem a big haul but considering the weather and the flow of the river we had a great time. We have been told that this stretch is even better in summer , that is if you can find a peg!!!
One word of warning is that some area's of the bank are quite slippy so if you are taking young children be very careful, but apart from that , well worth a try if you want something a bit different from the usual commercial fisheries that dominate fishing too much these days  - received 08/01/02

As I always mention , great site , just a quick suggestion , if anybody out there knows of anywere thats free to fish for the kids then contact the site.I know there's two places listed on the site already but lets here from other free places in other areas to give them a wider range , plus it will get my brother out of my hair!,thanks - received 10/01/02

Anyone living in the leyland area should really visit shruggs wood angling club , also known as stannings as it really is an excellent fishery and at £1 a day for seniors and 50p for juniors and O.A.P's you cant grumble.
There's a wide range of fish including common carp up to 20lb , mirror carp up to 5lb , good sized roach (up to 1lb!),perch , skimmers , tench up to 8lb and a few big bream approaching 7 to 8lb.
This really is an underrated fishery and a top tip for the bigger fish would be "felix kitten food" fished just off the bottom and for the majority of other fish try curried maggots now the temperatures have dropped for a good sized haul.
I hope that in the future I see many more anglers on one of my favourite fisheries as it really is a shame to let it go to waste.
Also (gasp!) , anyone with kids who wants a free day out with small game why not try "the tench pit" as it's normally called by locals , just off brindle road on the new housing estate. This pit is packed with perch ,roach , rudd ,a few crucians and if you can catch them (good luck!) some huge tench. Top bait tip for the tench is worm over hemp and for everything else maggots, good luck!

Thanks for the excellent site. I was looking for North West fisheries and found the descriptions and especially the pictures very useful. Its good to be able to see which ponds are more than just a newly dug rectangle!  I'm looking forward to trying some of the featured waters.

I was looking all over the internet for a site that was specific to my angling needs, and local too.
The venues that are listed will definitely have me paying a visit once it warms up a bit, the ones around apply bridge / parbold have an excellent description (not saying that they all don't) and will look forward to seeing my rod bent double at these and more of the other venues.
I've added you to my list of favourites, and will be connecting to this site regularly.
Keep up the good work. - received 19/12/00

As a keen angler but can only go some weekends it is difficult to chose from the different fisheries out there. But after going through your guide the decision making has become easier. THANK YOU

Good idea for a site. I looked on it in the hope of finding somewhere that my
11 year old son and a friend could get some tuition. We've taken him to
Wyreside Lakes, Cabus Nook Lane Caravan Park and Claylands at Scorton.
I will keep looking as the site develops. I'm sure they'll find the Tips and
Tricks useful. - received 5/4/2000

Great website. Very informative. I haven't heard of any of the fisheries, with the exception of Wyreside, but I will certainly visit some of them this year. You even supply directions.

Very impressed with your site.  Noticed the two ponds for kids at Walton Summit - Do you need any particular permits or permission to fish these? No, they are free to fish
